Mila Kartina Kamil
Making Media Accessible for Everyone
Hello, I am Mila Kartina Kamil, a scriptwriter since 2002. I write scripts for sinetron (soap operas), situation comedies, animated films, public service announcements, and educational videos.
Currently, I also work on Audio Description scriptwriting. Audio Description is the narration embedded in the silent scenes of films, providing descriptions for those who cannot see, explaining what is happening on the screen.
There is also a profession called Audio Describer. An Audio Describer narrates the Audio Description. Since I am also a narrator, I can narrate the Audio Descriptions I have written.
I created Audio Description scripts for the first time in 2007 for widescreen films Rindu Kami Pada-Mu, directed by Garin Nugroho, as well as Ketika and Nagabonar Jadi 2 by Deddy Mizwar. These films, embedded with Audio Description, were screened at the Nonton Bareng Tunanetra event in Jakarta, Semarang, and Yogyakarta.
But why should Audio Description be available? The purpose is to provide everyone, including the blind, with an equal right to access information.
Is Audio Description only beneficial to the blind? No. Besides the blind, other groups of people can benefit from Audio Description, such as those learning foreign languages, people with autism, and people with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
In addition to films and television series, Audio Description can also be embedded in other audiovisual media, like music videos and advertisements. It also can be used in live events, such as conferences, theater, dance performances, concerts, sports, and even fashion shows.
Interesting, right?
